There will also be performances of works by Hassler, Hildegard, and others, plus the ancient plainsong Te Deum.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, children and students, and may be purchased at the door. Proceeds benefit both the Buffalo Religious Arts Center and the WNY Chorale.

Arts Center Wins Award from the University at Buffalo

by Brian Castner

April 20th, 2009 – When we started our internship program, our goals were simple: receive high quality assistance with our tough projects, and hopefully provide different kind of learning experience for the students. Receiving an award for our program was never a thought.

But that's just what happened last week, when the Buffalo Religious Arts Center was named the Outstanding Non-Profit Internship Site for 2009 by the UB School of Management. It was a surprising honor, but a great testament to our wonderful interns, who have done marketing research, started our accounting books, and putting us on FaceBook, among many other projects.

Thank you to Carrie Gardner, the Director of the program, for this recognition. With the help of our interns, volunteers, members, and friends, the Religious Arts Center is growing every day.

Tour Schedule for 2009 Announced

by Brian Castner

March 24th, 2009 – The Buffalo Religious Arts Center is starting up its weekly tour program once again, beginning May 2nd.

And what's more, its just one of several ways to visit the growing Religious Arts Center.

Starting on May 2nd, tours will be held every Saturday, at 12:00 noon, and Sunday's, at 1:00pm. This architecural tour of the former St. Francis Xavier Church covers both the history and architecture of the church, as well as the growing collection of religious art. There are other tour packages available as well. Take a walking tour of Black Rock, and the Religious Arts Center, in one day. Those tours happen the first Saturday of each month, and are co-sponsored by Buffalo Tours.

As always, check back for more information, as our summer tour season gets in full swing.

Arts Center Teaming up with Quiet Waters

by Brian Castner

March 5th, 2009 – The next time you see a Quiet Waters Production, see if you recognize some of the windows displayed in their visual presentations.

The Buffalo Religious Arts Center is proud to be partnering with Quiet Waters, and aid them in their performances of the Stations of the Cross during this Lenten season.

Quiet Waters is a non-profit corporation whose mission is to help Catholics grow in their faith. This is accomplished through elaborate audio-visual performances of the Rosary through music, the Stations of the Cross, and other events. Their mix of faith and art (along with their purchase of a closed church in North Collins), makes them perfect partners for our group.

In their performance of the Stations of the Cross, Quiet Waters will use photos of the windows in the former St. Francis Xavier Church, the church we are currently transforming into a gallery. While other art glass representations of the Staions of the Cross exist in WNY, the Zettler windows in St. Francis Xavier are unique for their realistic portrayal of Jesus' last moments in the Munich tradition of stained glass.

This Lenten season, go see a Quiet Waters Production at one of their performances throughout WNY. And join us again to see the windows in person as our tour season starts up again this May.

New Acquisition: Nativity Set from St. Gerard's Church

by Brian Castner

February 21st, 2009 – The Christmas season may be over for another year, but at the Buffalo Religious Arts Center, we are still proud to show off some newly acquired items with a Christmas theme.

The parish of Blessed Trinity Church has generously donated the full nativity set from the former Saint Gerard's Church, a parish it merged with in 2008. The complete set, which includes over two dozen pieces, is of great cultural and historic value to the people of Buffalo.

Saint Gerard's Church was founded in 1911, and is a one-third reproduction of St. Pauls Outside-the-Walls in Rome. While this nativity set was not present from the begininng, it is an important part of religious activity for a large portion of St. Gerard's history, and the Buffalo Religious Arts Center is proud to be its new home.

The Religious Arts Center is now home to a variety of pieces, great and small, high art and cultural touchstones, and all of historic value that tell the story of the faithful in Western New York. Check back soon for more information on our 2009 tour season.

Religious Arts Center Receives Grant

by Brian Castner

February 17th, 2009 – The Buffalo Religious Arts Center is the proud recipient of a public grant to repair broken tiles on the roof of the former Saint Francis Xavier Church. Facilitated by Councilmember Joseph Golombek, the $1500 grant allowed the Religious Arts Center to replace missing clay tiles on the southern edge of the distinctive terra cotta roof. The work was completed before the worst of the winter snow hit, ensuring that the future Xavier Hall was well protected from the wet weather.

We wish to thank Councilmember Golombek for his assistance, but much work remains. Please join us in our efforts to create a center for art created by the faithful of Western New York.

Meet our new Intern

by Brian Castner

February 5th, 2009 – The Buffalo Religious Arts Center is very excited to welcome Nicole Crapez as our new intern for the Spring Semester of 2009.

Nicole comes to us from the University at Buffalo, through the UB Credit Bearing Internship Program. She is a a Graduate Student, double majoring in Architecture, and Business Administration, with a concentration in Marketing. She has worked for Bergmann Associates and TRM Architecure and Planning, and has experience in marketing special events and programs. Obviously, those are skills we are in great need of in a project such as ours, and we are very happy to have her working with us. Nicole will be doing grant research, website development, and market analysis work for us in the coming months.

Lastly, I want to say a thank you to Heesoo Yeo, our intern from last semester. Heesoo created our accounting books from scratch, and helped us prepare our first tax filings for 2008. He was a great volunteer, and we thank him for his work.

Welcome onboard, Nicole!!

Charity Vogel Interview

by Brian Castner

January 20th, 2009 – Charity Vogel, columnist at The Buffalo News, recently sat down with our Board President, Mary Holland. You can read the entire article here.

We want to thank Ms. Vogel for writing about our campaign to create a center for the religious art of Buffalo. The generosity of Ms. Holland has allowed us to take the first step. But we need everyone’s help to build a center for art worthy of the faithful who created it. Please join our endeavor, and visit during our 2009 tour program, which will be announced soon.

A thank you to everyone that wrote articles, and helped in the preparation of the newsletter. But a special thank you to two volunteers that did most of the heavy lifting: Rev Fred Jensen, our newsletter editor, and Kris Laun, layout and design specialist (in addition to her curating duties). Throughout the summer and early fall, on the first Saturday of the month at 10:00am, Buffalo Tours and the Buffalo Religious Arts Center will co-present a walking tour of both the Black Rock Neighborhood, and the stunning interior of the former St. Francis Xavier Church, now being transformed into a gallery of religious art.

See our Visiting page for more information, and stay tuned as we will soon announce new bus tours, as well as weekly architectural tours for 2009.

Volunteer in the Buffalo News

by Brian Castner

December 23rd, 2008 - I was delighted to see that one of our volunteers, Doreen DeBoth, was featured in the Buffalo News this past Sunday.

Doreen is one of our original members, a dedicated volunteer, and a wonderful docent. She is also a great member of the Black Rock community, a key member of the Grant-Amherst Business Association, and her Artsphere Studio is a retail anchor. We count ourselves lucky to have Doreen as part of our team.

Thank you again to Louise Continelli for highlighting the work of Doreen and the Buffalo Religious Arts Center. If you would like to volunteer with us, please contact us today.
